The evolution of his armor, as it improves over the course of the game(s), depicts the stylized use of ribbing, popular throughout the Dead Space universe and favored by the development team because of the way light and shadow would interplay off Isaac's suit in the dark and atmospheric lighting that is central to the game. Initial concept art for Isaac depicts a traditional heroic protagonist, but designers ultimately arrived at a rugged everyman.
